MISSISSAUGA CAN BUILD A WORLD CLASS WATERFRONT

MISSISSAUGA – The City of Mississauga deserves a world class waterfront, and mayoral candidate Steve Mahoney took an important step in that direction today by committing to create a Waterfront Mississauga Corporation to work with Council, community and business stakeholders to unlock the potential of the City’s 22 km of waterfront.

“As mayor, I will work to make our waterfront an even greater source of pride,” said Mahoney. “I will create a lean and empowered Waterfront Mississauga Corporation that will partner with local communities, other governments and the private sector to creatively co-develop new, sustainable communities on our waterfront.”

This small, focused organization, governed by an independent board of directors, will be tasked with delivering on the Inspiration Lakeview and Inspiration Port Credit visions and master plans that will make Mississauga’s waterfront a world class location to live, work, invest and play.

“I want to commend the leadership that Councillor Tovey, Councillor Mullin, Mayor McCallion and local residents and businesses have provided in developing the Inspiration visions for Lakeview and Port Credit,” said Mahoney. “This Corporation will work to make all their hard work a reality.”

The Waterfront Mississauga Corporation’s mandate will include developing accessible, new and improved mixed-use waterfront communities and public spaces, working with the City’s economic development department to establish entrepreneurial hubs, and being a steward of committed public funds provided for the development of the waterfront. Its independent board of directors will include two City councillors and qualified private sector individuals.

Similar to Toronto, Steve will work to develop a tri-partite funding arrangement with the provincial and federal governments to fund the development of the waterfront. The provincial and federal interests in the City’s waterfront should be supported with funding from these levels of government.

“Mississauga needs the federal and provincial governments at the table as funding partners to unlock the potential of our waterfront,” said Mahoney. “I have the experience and connections across all levels of government to make this vision a reality.”
