Ready or not, winter is coming, and it’s coming quickly. You are probably getting ready to deck the halls and enjoy holiday time with your family. However, before it gets any colder, it’s important to make sure your shed is ready and continuously maintained throughout the winter. Here are three maintenance tips for your outdoor shed during the winter.
1. Winterize Your Shed
The number one thing you need to do for your shed before winter arrives is to winterize it. This means taking a day or two to get everything in order before it gets too cold. So, pick a weekend and re-organize your shed.
Go through everything inside, and make sure to organize anything that has just been tossed in during the summer. Make holiday decorations more easily accessible to maintain that organization, and be sure to throw away any unneeded items.
You’ll also want to make sure there isn’t any kind of damage to the exterior of your shed. If there is, be sure to get that fixed ASAP. If you don’t, your items inside the shed might be ruined, and it can also allow pests to get in. So, just double and triple-check the structure, exterior, and interior for anything that looks troublesome.
2. Keep An Eye on the Exterior
As mentioned, taking preventative measures when it comes to repairing the shed before winter is important. However, just because your shed looks good in the fall doesn’t mean that it will stay perfectly intact during the winter months.
With harsher weather conditions, snow, rain, wind, ice, etc. sometimes comes damage. So, during the winter months, be sure to inspect the exterior of your shed for damage as well. If there are any problems, you’ll want to get ahead of them as soon as possible.
3. Clean Snow Off the Roof
While most sheds are probably sturdy enough to withstand some snow on the roof, it’s important to not let it accumulate too much. While beautiful, snow can get quite heavy. So, you don’t want that ruining your shed roof. You’ll want to watch how much snow has accumulated on the roof after each storm.
Then go outside and be sure to knock as much as you can off. You don’t want the snow to put unnecessary pressure on your roof or cause it to cave in. This could be a huge disaster if it’s not taken care of in a timely and frequent manner.
The main thing to remember is to just keep an eye on your shed. If you see any wear and tear on it, be sure to get it taken care of immediately to prevent further damage to the shed or items inside.
