5 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Carpet

0

We love carpets because they are comfortable to walk on. They help liven up a room- until they don’t. Carpets can become more of an eyesore than a delight to you when their lifespan decreases.

To extend the life of your carpet, you should immediately clean stains with the appropriate method and cleaner. Routine maintenance, such as vacuuming, can also help your carpet retain a fresh look.

You might not cry over spilled milk, but spilling coffee could take you to your limit. Those stains are difficult to get out of and could ruin the lifespan of your carpet. If you’ve got a rug looking a little worse these days, don’t worry! We’ve got five tips for you to extend the life of your carpet.

Tip 1: Immediately Clean Stains

The longer you let a stain set in, the harder it is to get out. Coffee and red wine are not only well-known for their tastes but also for creating tough stains in carpets. So, when you spill a little, don’t hesitate.

The experts over at PHS Interclean recommend that you soak up any excess liquid first before attempting to clean up spills from these beverages. However, don’t try soaking liquid already deep into the carpet – only clean the liquid still on top. Attempting so will only make the stain larger.

It is also important that you do not scrub! According to PHS Interclean, scrubbing will rub the coffee or red wine stain deeper into the carpet.

Tip 2: Use Appropriate Cleaner on Stains

Treating stains can help enhance your carpet’s lifespan, but don’t use just any cleaning product to get tough stains out.

If you have industrial-strength carpet cleaner on hand, now is the time to pull it out. If not, you can make a solution at home. PHS Interclean suggests mixing a tbsp of washing-up liquid with a tbsp of white vinegar and 500mL of water to help you clean away that tough stain.

Once the mixture is complete, use a cloth to dab the cleaner into the stain gently. If the stain is extra stubborn, try sprinkling some baking soda on it.

Tip 3: Vacuum Regularly

Aside from tough stains, the greatest threat your carpet faces is the build-up of everyday dirt and dust. Vacuuming these threats will extend the life of your rug and keep it looking healthy and new.

Try to vacuum once a week. Doing so more frequently might be preferred if you have pets or messy children.

Tip 4: Stop Dirt and Stains Before They Happen

Dirt prevention is worth it to keep you from hours of cleaning.

Follow a few simple rules to stop dirt and stains before they happen.

For example, taking off your shoes before entering can keep you from tracking in dirt and grim. If you want to wear your shoes into the house, simply rubbing them off before entering can also prevent some mess.

Keep food and drink away from your carpet. If you want to avoid ever having to clean a tough coffee or wine stain, keep those beverages in the uncarpeted areas!
