Recently, numerous people have begun making soaps on their own. No doubt that soap-making is easy to learn, yet if the procedure is not followed properly, the results are not likely to be as an individual expects.
Incorrect method of soap-making would end up creating a mess in the house and it would do you no good. So, how do you make homemade soap? Today, we are going to learn the step-by-step process to make soap at home.
How Do I Make Homemade Soap?
Homemade soap can be manufactured in two ways. Either you can use the hot process or the cold process. In the hot process, external heat is provided to initiate and fasten up the process of saponification. After that, the soap solution is converted into soap molds. It is then cooled for a day before soap pieces are cut from it.
Whereas, in the cold process, the chemicals are left to react on their own. Consequently, preparing soap by a cold process takes 6 to 7 weeks. It is only after 7 weeks that you can cut the soap into pieces and use it. On the other hand, in the hot process that soap is prepared in a day or two. To make homemade soap, you need to follow the below-given process-
•Melt the Carrier Oils and Prepare Lye
First and foremost, you have to melt carrier oils in a pressure cooker. You can use any oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or jojoba oil for this purpose. Ensure to keep the pressure cooker at low and allow the oil to melt slowly. You can also use two oils at once. Stir the oils gradually so that they melt properly.
By the time the oil is melting, you are required to prepare lye. Lye solution is prepared by adding lye to water. Doing the opposite can be harmful. The ratio of lye isto oil should be checked properly. Adding excessive lye can irritate the eyes. While adding lye to water, stir occasionally and allow the lye solution to rest for 20 minutes.
•Blend Oils and Lye
When enough is done, the next step is to blend oils and lye. Once you have checked that the oils have melted properly, and have attained a temperature between 120 degrees Fahrenheit to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, it is time to blend them into the blender. Meanwhile, check the lye solution. It might have cooled by that time.
Further, you are supposed to add the lye solution slowly and carefully in the blender and then mix the melted oils in the blender as well. Stir the mixture slowly. After that, you have to set the blender low and start blending the oils and lye. Keep stirring the mixture while it gets blended. This process is to be done for 10 to 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, you might notice that the mixture has thickened and has acquired a pudding-like texture. Add the mixture to the cooker again, or you can use a stick blender to avoid doing this step. Once the mixture has reached the cooker, cook on low for 45 to 50 minutes. Stir it gently and keep the cooker covered during the process.
•Mold the Soap Solution
Allow the soap solution to cool and reach a temperature below 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Having done enough, now is the time to add essential oils, colorants, dried leaves and flowers (if available,e), and moisturizer to the mixture. Moisturizer is added to the soap mixture to maintain the softness of the soap and keep it intact. Therefore, adding moisturizer is completely optional.
Lastly, pour the soap solution into the soap molds and then gently pat the soap mold or smoothen the top with the help of a spatula. Add more dried top from the top to beautify the soap even more. Allow the soap solution to set in the soap mold for 24 hours. Once it is cool, you can remove the soap from the mold and cut it into smaller pieces as required. Allowing your soap to rest for a week more would add to the hardness of the soap, so you can do that for better results.
