Del Webb is an active adult community where the people who live here are what distinguishes it from other similar communities. People who enjoy life and are having a good time while doing so. Dancing, dinner parties, clubs, art, golf, and many other activities are available. Whatever you enjoy doing, your Del Webb Lifestyle director can put you in touch with others who share your enthusiasm for it. We provide more than just a beautiful home; we provide a place where people can feel at home. We think you’ll enjoy your time here.
So, where are Del Webb communities located and what sets them apart?
Del Webb is the most well-known brand of active adult communities in the United States, catering to people over 55. Pulte Homes, Inc. (NYSE: PHM) owns the Del Webb brand. The Del Webb concept of active adult living can be traced back to Delbert Eugene Webb, who began his construction career in 1928 and later became a real estate developer. Webb became the developer of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Madison Square Garden, and the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, among other notable projects.
The charismatic Webb was also a co-owner of the New York Yankees from 1945 to 1965, combining his passion for baseball with his business acumen. During his 20-year tenure with the Yankees, the team won the World Series 10 times. With the knowledge and experience, he gained while constructing large-scale military housing projects during World War II, Webb came up with the idea of developing large-scale retirement communities in the late 1950s. Until that point, “retirement living” in the United States was reserved for the wealthy. In most cases, the average working man or woman chose to remain in their own home after they retired from their jobs. Sun City, the first Del Webb active adult lifestyle community, opened its doors in the Phoenix area on January 1, 1960, and is still in operation today. As the first of its kind, the community caters to active adults aged 55 and up who were drawn to Webb’s vision of affordable and active retirement living. The first Sun City in Arizona spawned several more in the state, as well as communities in California, Nevada, Texas, Florida, and South Carolina, according to the Sun City website. Huntley, Illinois, became the site of the first Del Webb community built outside of the “Sun Belt” when it opened in 1998
After 13 active adult lifestyle communities with more than 80,000 homes were built by the Del Webb Corporation by the year 2000, the company was sold.
After merging with Pulte Homes in July 2001, Del Webb Corp. became the largest homebuilding company in the United States.
For more than 55 years, Pulte Homes has been assisting individuals, couples, and families in achieving a better quality of life. J.D. Power and Associates awarded Pulte Homes the first-ever Platinum Award for Excellence in Customer Service among America’s largest homebuilding companies in 2004, and the company was the first to receive the award.
In 2002, Pulte Homes began introducing smaller, more intimate lifestyle-oriented active adult communities in the Northeast under the Del Webb brand. For more than 45 years, Pulte Homes has been at the forefront of active adult communities through its Del Webb brand, which draws on the company’s extensive experience in meeting today’s active adults’ social, physical, and emotional needs.
Those in Del Webb communities enjoy an active, facilitated lifestyle that allows the fastest-growing segment of the American population, Baby Boomers and retirees, the freedom to live their lives as they choose. One in every four Americans is 55 or older in today’s society. As the average lifespan increases, Americans are spending an increasing amount of time in their “retirement” years. However, Pulte Homes understand that Del Webb residents are not sitting in rocking chairs on their front porches sipping lemonade – they are biking, hiking, dating, dancing, or participating in new artistic, social, or cultural pursuits that enhance their quality of life.
Since the founding of the original Sun City, the concepts surrounding recreational pursuits have evolved significantly. Even though golf and shuffleboard were the most popular recreational activities in 1960, today’s Del Webb communities feature various amenities such as walking trails, bicycle, and jogging paths, and softball diamonds, among others. Sun City Carolina Lakes in Lancaster County, South Carolina, is one of the Del Webb communities currently under construction. The community is located along the banks of the Catawba River, and a kayaking and canoeing center is planned for the area.
Residents of these communities have access to a wide range of recreational amenities, including world-class fitness centers, swimming pools, game rooms, and the opportunity to socialize and interact with other residents who have similar interests to their own. In addition, most Del Webb communities have a full-time activities director who organizes social events, clubs, and even educational courses offered by nearby colleges and universities in the surrounding area.
With Sun City, Solera, and “by Del Webb” branded communities currently available for sale or in development in 21 states, Pulte Homes currently has communities open for sale or in development in the following states: Arizona; California; Colorado; Connecticut; Florida; Georgia; Illinois; Indiana; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; Nevada; New Jersey; New York; North Carolina (North Carolina), Ohio; Pennsylvania; South Carolina (South Carolina); Tennessee; Texas; and Virginia.
As part of its ongoing expansion of more traditional “resort” or “destination-style” communities, such as those modeled after the Sun City concept, Pulte Homes has also begun to recognize and cater to the retirement living needs of a growing number today’s Americans. For example, communities such as Bridgewater by Del Webb in the greater Detroit area, Great Island by Del Webb in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Celebrate by Del Webb in Fredericksburg, Virginia, provide an active adult lifestyle for residents who want to be close to their current home, family, and friends while maintaining a sense of community.
The Baby Boomer generation, estimated to number 78 million Americans and have spending power approaching $3 trillion, is currently the fastest-growing demographic in the United States when it comes to home buying. Continuing to meet that demand with exceptional and exciting new Del Webb communities is something Pulte Homes looks forward to doing in the future.
