The Pros and Cons of Living in Utah

If you are thinking about moving to a new location you will want to know all about the area. There are pros and cons attached to most destinations, depending on your point of view and needs. Utah is no different in that respect.

When you are searching homes for sale in Utah you will see a good choice of great accommodation options. That is definitely one of the pros of living in a state that has grown its population by close to 10% in less than a decade.

Here is a look at some of the positives and negatives to weigh up when considering a move to this state.

Utah ticks lots of the right boxes

If you have a checklist of priorities as to what you want from an area to persuade you to move things like housing costs, crime rates, cost of living, and amenities, would all be high on your agenda.

It is fair to say that Utah scores well on all of those key points. It enjoys comparatively low housing costs, a low crime rate, and a competitive cost of living average. The icing on the cake is that it offers great amenities, including skiing opportunities on your doorstep.

A great climate

Utah boasts a great dry continental-style climate profile. That translates to warm summers and cold winters. What you will find is that you don’t often experience extremes in temperature, whatever the season.

Cold winds tend to be blocked by the mountains. That helps contribute to an average yearly temperature that hovers around the 52 F mark.

Housing affordability

It is well worth highlighting that figures for average Utah house prices can be very misleading. They appear to be one of the highest averages in the US. However, that figure is badly skewed by the eye-watering house prices in Salt Lake City. Houses in this property hotspot are about 90% higher than the national average.

If you don’t have the bucks to live in Salt Lake City you will be pleased to discover that prices become far more attractive when you look at all other parts of Utah.

Utah, in general, is very affordable for the average working family, so don’t be fooled by national average price comparisons that are heavily influenced by sky-high Salt Lake prices.

Employment and education

If you are going to raise a family in Utah you want to know that there will be a great educational system at your disposal and that career opportunities are plentiful.

Utah delivers on both those key points. There has been a 70% increase in technology jobs in the last few years, for instance. That is a future-proof industry that bodes well for your career prospects if you move here.

Utah has an excellent school and university reputation. Two universities, the University of Utah, and Brigham Young, rank in the top 50 nationally.

What are the downsides?

It is relevant to state that Utah is not a particularly tax-friendly state compared to others. It ranks as the 25th highest in the country.

Driving standards and road safety awareness amongst drivers do not compare well with other states. That is a negative that you can adapt to and make allowances for once you know about this issue.

All things considered, there are more pros than cons to moving to Utah. That is an opinion shared by many when you see how many people are choosing to relocate here.
