5 of the Best Home Improvement Projects

0

Did you know that the home improvement market size was north of $762.9 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 4.3% from 2021 to 2027?

While you might want to renovate your kitchen, master bedroom, or basement, it’s also a good idea to focus on some projects on the exterior of your home. But what outdoor projects should be on the top of your agenda? The answer will depend on what you want most and your budget.

Continue reading to look at five of the best outdoor home improvement projects homeowners should consider tackling.

1. Patio Cover

Have you ever considered getting a patio cover? A patio cover is the next logical step if you already have a back deck. An overhead covering will allow you to spend time outside with family and friends whenever you want. Without a patio cover, you and your guests will have to retreat indoors if there’s a rainstorm. But the right patio cover will provide protection from the elements.

Gone will be the days when you have to cancel an outdoor BBQ due to inclement weather.

A sunny day on the patio is better than bad weather inside. You can take advantage of this by installing a patio cover that will keep the rain and wind off your surfaces. The cover will provide shade from harsh sunlight or excessive heat from direct sunlight and could be an excellent spot for home solar panels.

2. Outdoor Kitchen

Did you know that the global outdoor kitchen market was worth $19.64 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at an 8.3% compound annual growth rate between 2022 and 2030? So says Grand View Research. The research firm adds that the anticipated growth is a function of a shift in consumer behavior, rising disposable income, and more.

With an outdoor kitchen, you can basically get the same functionality outside on your back deck as you do inside in your kitchen. Depending on your needs and how much you’re willing to spend, you can get an outdoor stove, fridge, sink with running water, and more.

3. Retaining Wall

Another way to transform your exterior space is by adding a retaining wall. A retaining wall is a landscaping structure usually constructed out of concrete blocks, rocks, or other materials to help retain the soil behind it. It can add some oomph to an otherwise boring exterior space.

In addition to boosting the aesthetics of your exterior space, a retaining wall can also boost the value of your property, prevent erosion, and provide space for vertical gardens.

“A retaining wall can take your backyard up a notch by creating elevation changes and different planting areas,” says Angel Khan, owner of Rainier Rockeries. “You can also use a retaining wall to reshape slopes, divert and utilize rainwater, and even control flooding during heavy downpours.

“But due to the very real possibility of drainage problems and the heavy lifting required in transporting the brick materials, it’s best to hire professionals to set up your retaining wall.”

4. Landscaping

It’s also a good idea to invest in landscaping. You can add trees, gardens, and shrubs to beautify your outdoor space. By transforming the exterior of your home, you’ll boost its value and increase your and your family’s enjoyment of the outdoor area.

During the COVID-19 period when stay-at-home orders were in force, many people spent more time at home than they were used to. If something like that ever happens again, you’ll want to have a pleasant outdoor space to spend time in with family.

5. Paint

Painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform a space. You could paint the outdoor window frame, doors, and garage door. You’ll be amazed at how a few coats of quality paint can make such a big difference. And it won’t cost you a small fortune either.

These are just a few options available to you if you want to tackle some outdoor projects. Many people focus on the inside a lot more than the outside. So, if you’ve been neglecting the exterior space, now’s as good a time as any to consider what outdoor projects might be in order.
